FG criticises Government's failure to introduce new drink-driving limit

The Government is coming under pressure today regarding the delay in reducing the legal blood alcohol limit for motorists.

The Government is coming under pressure today regarding the delay in reducing the legal blood alcohol limit for motorists.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey says a lower limit will definitely be introduced in 2009, but Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd says this delay is unacceptable.

He is also criticising the Government's failure to commit to a 50mg limit, which is the norm across Europe.

A letter obtained by Mr O'Dowd shows that the Department of Health wrote to the Department of Transport last year complaining that the Road Safety Strategy failed to specifically recommend a new limit of 50mg per 100ml of blood.
