FF urge government to haul in banks over interest rate hikes

The government is being urged to haul in the banks and insist they stop interest rate hikes after AIB announced a half a percent rate hike for variable mortgage customers - the second rise in three months.
Fianna Fáil's Michael McGrath says the government has to act after failing to make the banks adhere to promises so far.
"I'm not convinced that the banks have exhausted all of the other possible avenues of cutting costs to avoid increasing variable mortgages. I think there is more than can be done.
"It was promised that government would insist banks would cut their costs to forego variable rate increases. That hasn't happened."
