A Fianna Fáil senator is calling is vowing to put pressure on the Government to do more to prevent suicide in Ireland.

The pledge by Mary White follows the publication of an Oireachtas committee report revealing that very little has been done in recent years to reduce the suicide rate.

Suicide claims move lives every year than road accidents, but Ms White says only seven of 33 recommendations made in a report three years ago have been implemented by the Government.

She says she will raise the matter at the next meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.
