Fewer murders, but more sexual offences recorded in last 12 months
There were 22 fewer murders recorded in Ireland in the 12 months before June 2015 compared to the same period last year, official figures have shown.
Central Statistics Office numbers released today also showed that the number of robbery, extortion and hijacking offences recorded fell by 8.9% over the same period, down from 2,830 to 2,578.
Other offence groups to feature decreases were dangerous or negligent acts (-5%), public order and other social code offences (4.7%), weapons and explosives offences (-3.2%), damage to property and to the environment (-2.5%), controlled drug offences (-1.2%).
Other offence groups showed increases, however.
The annualised number of attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences recorded jumped from 14,548 in 2014 to 16,054 in 2015 - a 10.4% increase.
There were also increases in the number of burglary and related offences (8.4%), fraud, deception and related offences (5.9%), offences against Government, justice procedures and organisation of crime (5.8%) and sexual offences (3.3%) recorded.
