Fennelly report: Taoiseach and Fitzgerald have 'full confidence' in AG Whelan

The Attorney General Maire Whelan has the "full confidence" of the Taoiseach and the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald, the Minister said today.

Minister Fitzgerald was reacting to the findings of the Fennelly Commission's interim report.

In it, Mr Justice Fennelly said that although she was not under any duty to do so, it would have been "reasonable and prudent" for Maire Whelan (pictured) to have contacted the Justice Minister about the taping of phonecalls in Garda stations in March 2014.

However, she did not do so.

Minister Fitzgerald said she was satisfied with Maire Whelan's actions. "I and the Taoiseach have full confidence in the Attorney General," she said.

"You have to read the detail of (the) Fennelly (report), where it talks about the legal obligation in relation to particular cases that the Attorney General has to report to the Taoiseach.

She referred to the "understanding that there was in the Attorney General's office that the Commissioner would have informed the Department of Justice" of the relevant matters.
