Fatal stabbing in Louth overnight

A murder probe is expected to be launched after a 30-year-old man was stabbed to death.

The attack happened in the Rathmullen Park area of Drogheda, Co Louth, at approximately 1.45am today.

The victim – named locally at Wayne McQuillan – was found with a number of stab wounds in the front garden of a house.

He was rushed by gardai to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardai said a 40-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the investigation, which is expected to be upgraded to murder.

She can be held for up to 24 hours at Drogheda Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Officers in Drogheda have appealed for witnesses.

Elsewhere, a 48-year-old man is being quizzed over a gun attack in Co Kerry.

A 31-year-old is being treated in hospital after he suffered wounds to the right- hand side of his body.

It is understood that the incident happened at a house party and both men knew each other.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The suspect can be held for up to three days at Killarney Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
