Gardaí are today investigating a fatal road accident in Co Limerick today.

The collision, involving two vehicles, which occurred on the R523 at Carrickerry, Athea, Co Limerick, at approximately 7.10am today.

A male, 63 years, sole occupant, was fatally injured when his car and another vehicle were in collision.

He was pronounced dead at scene and his body was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital where a post mortem is to be arranged.

The driver and sole occupant of the second vehicle, a male aged 33 years, was also taken to Limerick Regional Hospital with non-serious injuries.

The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.
