Farmers warned to control weeds or risk losing EU payments
04/06/2007 - 13:02:18Farmers are being warned that they may lose some of their EU payments unless they deal with weeds growing on their lands.
Meanwhile, county councils have been reminded that they will be fined if they fail to curb noxious weeds along roadsides.
Thistle, dock, wild oats and ragwort are the most common of noxious weeds and this time of year they are at their most plentiful.
Some are poisonous to animals while other can reduce crop yields.
There is an onus on farmers to control them on their land, or risk cuts in their single farm payments.
