Family pleads for help in releasing Irish citizen jailed for more than a year in Egypt

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan is being urged to request the release of an Irish citizen who is in jail in Egypt.

Ibrahim Halawa has now been in custody in Cairo for over a year, after being arrested during a protest last August.

Ibrahim is the son of Ireland's most senior Muslim cleric and his sisters, who were also arrested, were released.

His sister Somaia Halawa is critical of Egypt's human rights record, and she says it is important Minister Flanagan demands a fair trial and Ibrahim's release.
