Fáilte Ireland: Olympics may have detrimental effect

Fáilte Ireland says it's too early to say if tourism in Ireland will benefit or suffer because of the Olympic Games in London.
The group says it has been a mixed season for the tourism industry - hotels and businesses in large towns and cities have performed well but small, rural areas have found it difficult.
It's not yet clear if a viral campaign to attract British people to Ireland during the Olympics has had much success.
Speaking at the launch of a new initiative to promote Merrion Square in Dublin to tourists, Chief Executive of Failte Ireland Shaun Quinn said the games could even have a detrimental effect on tourism.
"Typically, around Olympic times host nations don't do well along with those feeding off it. We always knew this would be a challenging time.
"What can happen when you have the Olympics in somewhere such as London, people can alter their travel plans not to come near the UK at all and we could suffer as a result."
