10/11/2009 - 08:06:22
The Tánaiste has said that more than 7,400 people are now receiving direct government support to keep their jobs.

The Employment Subsidy Scheme provides funding to help vulnerable companies avoid having to lay off staff.

Minister Mary Coughlan said that almost €68m would be issued this week under the first round of the scheme.

Just under 7,500 jobs are now to be supported by the scheme in 453 companies. The Tánaiste said almost 35,300 jobs would be retained as a result.

The scheme is limited to exporting companies who have to guarantee to keep a multiple of people in employment for each grant received.
