05/03/2010 - 16:05:34
West Cork was today reeling from the news that up to 140 people are set to lose their jobs, following the Supreme Court decision to reject a restructuring plan for the Bandon-based Fleming Construction Group.

ACC bank were to ask the High Court today to wind up three companies in the Fleming building group, which has debts of more than €1bn.

The move has been described as a devastating blow for Bandon and the town’s morale by deputy mayor Margaret Murphy-O’Mahony.

She said the company, which is owned by John Fleming, had been an excellent employer in the town and said yesterday’s decision would also impact local sub-contractors.

She paid tribute to Mr Fleming saying he had generously supported the local community over the years.

A spokesman for the group said Mr Fleming wanted to thank all of his staff, suppliers and all those who have dealt with the company, many of whom are from the west Cork region.
