Exterminators inundated with calls thanks to 'Celtic Tiger' renovations

Homeowners with badly-built 'Celtic Tiger' extensions are suffering from infestations of rats from the sewer system, an extermination company has warned.

Homeowners with badly-built 'Celtic Tiger' extensions are suffering from infestations of rats from the sewer system, an extermination company has warned.

Pest control companies say they are "inundated" with calls about rat infestations, and many of them are from residents of homes where jobs weren't properly completed between the late 1990s and 2000s.

Trevor Hayden from Complete Pest Control said a common problem they discover when they're called out is open access to the sewer system in the walls or floor.

"Either the drainage or the proofing in the building hasn't been done correctly," he said. "So [people] have had toilets moved, and the old waste pipe hasn't been blocked off correctly.

"And what's happening is the rats are getting in, they're coming under the floor into the walls, and they've free run of the house then."
