The former chief executive of Irish Life & Permanent Denis Casey will not appear before the banking inquiry.

Mr Casey has been told he will not have to appear in public after an intervention from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The DPP wrote to members last week saying his evidence might "prejudice a number of prosecutions currently being pursued".

Mr Casey had provided the inquiry with a written statement in advance of his scheduled appearance. A spokesman said he was "fully prepared to attend at the Inquiry until the Direction was withdrawn by the Inquiry".

The inquiry returns from its summer break tomorrow morning when former Irish Nationwide CEO Michael Fingleton will give evidence.
