European inspectors to review Ireland's trafficking policy

A Council of Europe investigation team arrives in Ireland today to review Ireland's efforts to combat human trafficking here.

The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland said human trafficking can often result in people being forced into slave labour.

It says up to 70 suspected victims of trafficking have ended up in Irish prisons, because they have been forced into illegal activity like working in cannabis grow-houses.

The Centre's spokesperson, Grainne O'Toole, said forced labour is occurring across a whole range of industries.

She said domestic work, particularly in the case of au pairs, was resulting in forced labour. But the restaurant, agriculture, retail and construction sectors were problematic.
