EU farm leaders to meet on horsemeat scandal

EU farm leaders are meeting in Brussels tomorrow to discuss the latest developments in the horsemeat scandal, including the investigation of an Irish meat plant in Tipperary.

B&F meats in Carrick-on-Suir is under investigation by the Department of Agriculture and the Gardaí after it emerged that the firm had been exporting horsemeat, labelled as beef, to the Czech Republic.

Yesterday, both Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil called on the Government to set up an independent investigation into the scandal.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin also asked Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney to step aside from the issue, accusing him of having misread the gravity and scale of the problem.
