ESB hoping to restore power to all homes this evening

Around 3,500 homes are still without power this afternoon after lightning strikes this morning caused disruption to the electricity supply.

The south of the country has been affected with the majority of outages in Kilkenny, Clonmel, Bandon and Arklow.

ESB crews are working to repair the lines and it is hoped power will be restored to all areas by 5pm this evening.

Meanwhile, Irish Ferries swift sailings have been cancelled over the next two days because of stormy conditions.

Motorists have also been advised to take care, with reports of debris and trees down in many parts of the country.

A weather warning is in place today with strong winds, heavy rain and hail all forecast.
