Enterprise Minister admits differences on sick-pay issue

Minister for Jobs and Enterprise Richard Bruton said today that there are ''genuine differences'' in views when it comes to the issue of sick pay.

Minister for Jobs and Enterprise Richard Bruton said today that there are ''genuine differences'' in views when it comes to the issue of sick pay.

It follows reports of a rift between Minister Bruton and the Social Affairs Minister Joan Burton, who wants employers to pay up to four weeks of sick pay, instead of the State.

An IMF staff report has supported this view, but Minister Bruton has warned against introducing any measures that would add to the cost of employment.

He is denying any division within Government over the issue, but admitted that there are differences between various parties.

"I think there's a consultation going on, and I think there are genuine differences and that's why a consultation is occurring," he said.

"Employers see this as a potential regulatory burden, I think the Minister sees that sickness is very expensive on the State, and is looking at ways to reduce absenteeism reduce the burden."
