Enda Kenny seeking to give criminals appropriate punishments
06/05/2006 - 16:49:43The Fine Gael Leader is insisting that criminals will get the convictions they deserve is his party is returned to power.
Enda Kenny says the Oireachtas should decide on the punishment to fit the crime by drawing up a list of appropriate sentences on behalf of the public.
Speaking at today's Ard Fheis, Mr Kenny also says he wants judges to be more accountable for their decisions.
“The prosecution would speak on the range of sentence that the people would estimate would be appropriate for the crime in question,” he said.
He went on to add: “The judge would then deliver a sentence within that range, and if a judge did not do that, that judge would be expected to give his or her reasons in open court. In other words, the voice of the people would be heard in court.”
