Electricians may return to picket line

Possible industrial unrest among electricians appears back on the agenda, following the Association of Electrical Contractors of Ireland's rejection of a phased 4.9% pay rise over six months for electricians.

Possible industrial unrest among electricians appears back on the agenda, following the Association of Electrical Contractors of Ireland's rejection of a phased 4.9% pay rise over six months for electricians.

Some 80% of members last night voted to reject the proposals made by the Labour Court.

The Electrical Contractors' Association has already accepted the recommendations along with the executive of the electricians' union, the TEEU.

The union has now called on the Government to investigate the reasons behind the dispute.

TEEU general secretary Owen Wills said: "A resolution has to be based on the Labour Court recommendation and the proposals of the LRC otherwise the process is of no value to us."

Willis added that "if it can't be resolved in a short period of time, weeks rather than months, we have to make a decision whether to reinstate industrial action".

Earlier this month 10,000 electricians went on strike, closing down scores of building sites across the country, including the high-profile Lansdowne Road Stadium project and the second terminal at Dublin Airport.
