An elderly woman has been killed when she was struck by a car at around 1.40pm in Ennis, Co Clare, today.
It is understood that the 74-year-old woman had been putting her shopping into the back of her car at Francis Street in Ennis when the car unexpectedly reversed, knocking her to the ground.
The woman's six-year-old grandson was inside the vehicle at the time while a second grandchild - a 10-year-old girl was standing close to the car.
Both children escaped injury but are being treated in hospital for shock.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and her body removed to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem examination.
Gardaí in Ennis are treating the incident as a tragic accident, but have appealed for any witnesses who were in the area of Aldi and Tesco at the time to contact them.
Francis Street remains closed, pending a forensic examination, though it is expected the road will re-open later this evening.
