Elderly man to be sentenced for rape of daughters

A 74-year-old terminally ill man is facing jail today for repeatedly abusing and raping his daughters in Co Galway between 1977 and 1990.
The Central Criminal Court heard during the sentencing hearing that the abuse of the five girls has torn their family apart.
The man was described in court as a tough and sometimes violent disciplinarian who kept the gates locked and grew trees around the house to keep his children isolated.
He could also be cruel to animals and once put a stray cat in a potato sack and called on his children to watch as he killed it by bashing it against an inside wall.
He began to regularly abuse his daughters when they were aged about four or five – two of the girls were raped from the age of eight.
When reported to gardaí in 2008 he dismissed the accusations as lies but later pleaded guilty.
He is terminally ill and may now die in prison as Mr Justice Paul Carney has warned that he is facing a significant jail term.
