A man has died after the car he was driving crashed at Ballydoogan on the N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road in Co Galway today.

A man has died after the car he was driving crashed at Ballydoogan on the N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road in Co Galway today.

The man, aged in his 80s, was fatally injured when the car left the road and collided with a tree at around 4.10pm this afternoon. He was the sole occupant of the car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

This stretch of road (N65 just past the junction with the Loughrea to Ballinasloe Rd – R446) is closed pending the completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091-842870, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
