An elderly man has been arrested after a body was discovered in West Cork.

The body of the 53-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was found at the bottom of an embankment at 5.20pm today after gardaí responded to a disturbance in the Seskin area, west of Bantry.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the area was cordoned off for a technical examination. The State Pathologist has been notified.

It is understood that injuries on the body are consistent with an assault, but that will not be confirmed until a post mortem is carried out tomorrow.

The man under arrest, who is in his 70s, is being questioned at Bantry garda station.

It is believed the incident occurred after a fight between people who were drinking in the area.

Gardaí say they are treating the death as suspicious.
