EC to meet over horse meat crisis

The European Commission will meet tomorrow to discuss the horse meat crisis.

The British government is believed to be considering a ban on EU meat exports while both France and Britain have called for the "criminals" who disguised horse meat as beef to be tracked down.

The Minister for Agriculture has said new food testing standards will be introduced in Ireland on the back of the scandal which has spread across Europe.

Simon Coveney explained: “At the moment there is absolutely no obligation on anybody to test products that they are producing or someone else is producing for them for alien DNA, something that isn’t on the label.

“Now we are going to be asking companies to test on a quarterly basis the produce they are producing for customers.”
