Dundon in court bid to delay trial for Geoghegan murder
Limerick man John Dundon's lawyers are in the Supreme Court to try delay his trial for the murder of Garryowen rugby player Shane Geoghegan.
Senior Counsel Martin O’Rourke has said it looks like there was a deliberate attempt on behalf of the prosecution to delay the disclosure of evidence to the defence.
Mr Dundon, of Hyde Road, Limerick, was charged last October with the murder of Mr Geoghegan in November 2008.
His trial at the Special Criminal Court was set for June 4 last. His defence lawyers say less than a month before the trial date the prosecution served them with around 27,000 documents of unfiltered evidence, along with 419 disks of CCTV footage.
Mr Dundon’s barrister Martin O’Rourke claims the prosecution has not given a sufficient reason for what looks like a ‘deliberate attempt to delay disclosure’.
He says they will probably be ready to go to trial in the autumn.
The Special Criminal Court and the High Court refused the defence’s attempts to delay the case and the matter is now before the Supreme Court on appeal.
Mr Dundon, who has recently been on hunger strike in Portlaoise prison, was not present but Shane Geoghegan’s mother Mary was in court today.
