A man has been shot dead in Dublin.

The 39-year-old was gunned down at a housing estate in Drimnagh this afternoon.

This latest gangland shooting happened just before 3pm at a housing estate on Cooley Road in Drimnagh not far from where the victim lived.

He was shot several times and died at the scene.

The area where he was shot has been cordoned off pending a technical examination.

Gardaí have identified the man as a major figure in organised crime but will not release his name until his family is notified.

It is known that the 39-year-old was heavily involved in the Dublin drugs trade and was twice acquitted of being involved in a gangland hit a few years ago.

Gardaí at Sundrive Garda Station are investigating the man's killing and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
