A rally will take place in Dublin tomorrow to protest an assault on an Afghan man in Cloverhill Prison.

Walli Ullah Safi, 21, was hospitalised after being held captive by prison inmates during a 12 hour demonstration, when prisoners occupied the exercise yard.

Walli, who does not speak English, was found this month on the side of the M7, after escaping from the conflict in Afghanistan as a stowaway.

He was arrested and taken to court for not having documents, before being detained in Clover Hill prison.

“Walli needs protection urgently, and not to be imprisoned like a criminal,” said a spokesperson from the Anti Racism Network.

“He needs to be freed immediately and he needs to be properly informed about his rights, and be afforded the protection he is clearly in need of,” the spokesperson said.

The rally will take place outside the Department of Justice and Equality, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, at 11am, on Friday 31 July.
