A Dublin father of two has been sentenced to three-and-a-half-years in jail for membership of the IRA.

Forty-five year-old Robert Nolan of Elmdale Park, Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot had pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful organisation, on January 11, 2012.

The Special Criminal Court heard gardaí found a Webley revolver in a brown paper bag under his seat when they stopped a Ford Mondeo car at Ballinacurra Weston in Limerick last January.

The driver of the car was convicted IRA member 45-year-old Dermot Gannon, from Wellview Crescent, Mulhuddart, Co Dublin.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old Dublin man, seperately charged with membership of the IRA and unlawful possession of a firearm has been freed on bail, also by the Special Criminal Court.

Daryl Mulcahy of Matt Talbot Court was charged last week with the unlawful possession of one 9mm Parabellum calibre Beretta Model 9000S semi-automatic pistol at Temple Street in Dublin on December 4, as well as with IRA membership.

Mulcahy was remanded on bail until February 19 next year.
