Dublin businesses count cost of yesterday’s riots

26/02/2006 - 13:02:09
Businesses in Dublin are today counting the cost of yesterday's violence in the city centre.

Between damage to premises, and the loss of business, the cost could run to hundreds of thousands of euro.

Fourteen people - including six gardaí - were hospitalised after rioting broke out across the city.

Forty-one people were arrested that following the attempt to stage a loyalist march in Dublin.

Peggy Carney works in the Front Page newsagents on Grafton Street - she said it was a frightening situation:

She said: “We ourselves had to close very shortly after (the rioting started) – we made a conscious decision it was the right thing to do for the safety of the shop and the people. There were some customers left in the shop for a good half an hour before they could leave.

“Of course it had an effect on all the businesses in the area. We were lucky, we had no damage to this shop but of all the shops around us a lot of them still are badly damaged, so it’s going to take some time before it’s fixed up.”
