Dublin Bus strike during school term? It could play out that way, says union

A union representing Dublin Bus drivers has warned that they could go on strike this autumn.

The statement follows their lack of satisfaction with an 8.2% pay rise awarded by the Labour Court yesterday.

Workers who had wanted increases of up to 31%, say it is not enough, and want the same amount as Luas drivers.

Unions will now ask members to vote on the pay proposals, and a rejection could lead to industrial action.

General Secretary of the National Bus and Railworkers Union, Dermot O'Leary, was asked if they could be on strike when the schools reopen in September.

"We're not dispute-orientated at all," he said. "It’s the last resort it's a nuclear option, I keep saying this.

"But you're right, I mean it could play out that way.

"We're hopeful obviously that it may even play out better than that in that we may not even have to threaten a dispute."
