Dublin Bay North declines to select Richard Bruton to run in 2016 election

Minister Richard Bruton has not been selected by Fine Gael delegates in his constituency to run in next year's general election.

In an embarrassing move for the Jobs Minister at the Dublin Bay North selection convention last night, members voted for Dublin city councillor Naoise Ó’Muirí and Stephanie Regan as their preferred candidates to contest the election.

It is understood to be in reaction to a directive from the party's headquarters that in line with the gender quota rules, one man and one woman should be selected.

Mr Ó Múirí was elected to Dublin City Council in 2004. Ms Regan has been working as a FG local representative since last year.

The party is expected to add Richard Bruton to the ticket later today.
