Drumm: 'Another day, another billion'

In the hours leading up to the bank guarantee in September 2008, the CEO of Anglo, David Drumm, joked about the haemorrhage of cash from the bank.

Mr Drumm is quoted in today's Irish Independent as referring to the outflow of deposits from the zombie bank as "another day, another billion".

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny is ruling out a tribunal of inquiry into the 2008 bank guarantee, insisting a parliamentary inquiry will lead to the truth.

Mr Kenny's comments come after a series of tapes involving senior Anglo Irish Bank executives were released this week after they were obtained by the Irish Independent.

The Taoiseach hopes a parliamentary inquiry can get underway in the autumn, however there is concern that some of the leading figures could go to court to avoid being answerable to the committee.

The Irish Times today reports that Government sources have indicated holding another referendum to give more powers to the Oireachtas is a real possibility.

A similar referendum was rejected in 2011 by a 52 to 48% majority.
