Roads turned hazardous overnight as temperatures dropped to -4C.

There is a slight thaw expected this afternoon, but lows of -6C are predicted tonight.

Met Éireann issued a yellow alert yesterday, which is expected to remain in place until 10am tomorrow (Monday) morning.

AA Roadwatch's Nicole Gernon said: "If you do encounter snow or ice, remember that stopping times are 10 times greater in these conditions than in normal conditions.

"Leave extra time to complete your journey and do try to stick to major roads as they are more likely to have been gritted than secondary roads."
