Drivers urged to watch out for deer

With mornings and evenings getting darker, drivers across the country are being urged to watch out for deer.

The National Parks and Wildlife service has teamed up with Mayo County Council to launch a DeerAware Campaign.

Latest figures show there are between 400 and 500 collisions between drivers and the animals in Ireland each year.

Noel Gibbons, the road safety officer with Mayo County Council, has said: "It's rutting season for deer so we are appealing to motorists to watch out for deer crossing and to reduce your speed.

"Particularly at this time of the year, light reduces and it is more difficult to see these animals on the road."
