Drivers urged to be cautious as temperatures dip to -6C

Motorists are being warned to drive with extreme caution as there is ice on some roads this morning.

A yellow weather warning for low temperatures remains in place this morning after temperatures dropped to as low as -6C in some parts of the country overnight.

Drivers are being advised to slow down, as some areas may be affected by freezing fog and ice.

Adrian Harmon from AA Roadwatch said major routes were more likely to be treated for icy conditions.

"The weather warning is in effect until 10am, so road conditions coyld still be quite slippy in places," he said.

"Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to de-ice your car (and) use major routes as they are more likely to be gritted."

It will stay very cold today. Met Éireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly said temperatures may reach 2C or 3C in the east of the country, but that is likely to be the highest seen today.
