Driver killed in Ulster Rally crash
A 20-year-old driver has been killed while competing in a motor race in the North.
Timothy Cathcart, from Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, died after his car left the road during the Ulster Rally close to his home town.
His Welsh co-driver, Dai Roberts from Carmarthen, was injured and airlifted to hospital, organisers said. Police are investigating.
The accident happened during special stage three of the event, which has now been cancelled. The race is part of the British Rally Championship.
A spokesman for the organisers said: “The Northern Ireland Motor Club extends its sympathy to the family and friends of the competitor who was fatally injured during a tragic accident in today’s Ulster Rally.”
The accident happened in Co Fermanagh near Fivemiletown.
The Ulster Rally is a road event centred around the lakeland town of Enniskillen. Fewer than 200 cars are allowed to start.
It involves 130 competitive miles (209km) over 15 stages in counties Fermanagh and Tyrone.
A PSNI) spokesman said: “Following a serious incident during a special stage of the Ulster Rally today, police can confirm that a male competitor has died.
“The police helicopter was used to airlift a second competitor to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where his condition is described as serious.”
An investigation into the incident is now under way.
