The number of people caught drink-driving in the North over the festive period has dropped by nearly a quarter, it was announced today.

The 24% drop came despite an increase in the number of motorists who were stopped and tested.

The PSNI said 477 of 5,500 motorists tested were over the legal limit.

Compared with the previous winter it meant 152 fewer people were over the limit while 114 more roadside tests were carried out.

The oldest person found to be over the limit was 77, while the youngest – at 16, was too young to be behind the wheel. Men were the big offenders, with women making up just 11% of the total.
