DPP hampered by lack of staff and funding

The office of the Director of Public Prosecution is struggling to cope with its workload because of staff shortages.

The DPP James Hamilton, says the current lack of funding for a dedicated policy groups is an "enormous drawback" when it comes to dispensing advice about European and International law issues to the Department of Justice.

He says the establishment of a fully resourced prosecution policy unit is also essential to cope with new prosecutions which come about under the Garda Síochána Act 2005.

His comments follow a number of major changes to the statute books including the new Criminal Justice Act, introduced last year.
