DPP hampered by lack of staff and funding
19/08/2007 - 10:10:20The office of the Director of Public Prosecution is struggling to cope with its workload because of staff shortages.
The DPP James Hamilton, says the current lack of funding for a dedicated policy groups is an "enormous drawback" when it comes to dispensing advice about European and International law issues to the Department of Justice.
He says the establishment of a fully resourced prosecution policy unit is also essential to cope with new prosecutions which come about under the Garda Síochána Act 2005.
His comments follow a number of major changes to the statute books including the new Criminal Justice Act, introduced last year.
