Doyle: Role of RTÉ board 'critical' in libel case

Fr Kevin Reynolds

The head of the Oireachtas Communications Committee says he has concerns about the role of the board of RTÉ in the Fr Kevin Reynolds libel case.

RTÉ chiefs will appear before the committee later today - following the publication of the BAI report into the Mission to Prey programme almost two weeks ago.

The Chief Executive of the BAI, Michael O'Keeffe, will also face questions.

Fine Gael TD Andrew Doyle is chair of the committee and he says concerns will be raised about the cost of the libel and how much the board of RTÉ knew: "The role of the board in all of this is critical, specifically in sensitive cases.

"The director general is in fact the editor-in-chief and there seems to have been no method in place in cases like that, where a highly sensitive programme was been proposed to be broadcasted.

"There wasn't a method in place of bringing it to the attention of the director general at least."
