Donegal student 'lucky' to avoid jail sentence in UK

A Co Donegal medical student, who tried to take a replica pistol onto a plane travelling from London to Northern Ireland, has avoided a prison sentence in the UK.

The 25-year-old was also carrying blank rounds of ammunition when he was stopped at Stansted Airport last January.

He has been ordered to do community service but the British judge told him he was very lucky to have escaped a jail term.
