Dana Rosemary Scallon has secured the backing of a third local authority to run for the presidency and is one short of an official nomination.

Donegal County Council unanimously voted in favour of the former Eurovision winner at a morning meeting.

Dana is expected to get the backing of Westmeath or Offaly councils later today to become the sixth candidate.

Meanwhile, Senator David Norris, who suffered a setback in his race for the Aras after South Dublin County Council last night refused to back him, is seeking support from Cork County Council later.

With the support of Fingal and Laois, he will need two other local authorities to come on board as the scrap for nominations goes down to the wire.

The deadline for submitting papers to get on the ballot paper is midday tomorrow.
