A meeting to discuss doctors' concerns over budget cuts and the planned introduction of free GP care for children under the age of six will get underway in Dublin this evening.
The National Association of General Practitioners said that more than 100 practices across the country face closure, with €160m cut from general practice in the last four years.
Doctors from across the east coast will gather in Dublin to discuss the issues.
CEO of the group Chris Goody said GPs were concerned that patient safety would be affected.
"If patients who actually need to see their GPs cannot do so, then patient safety is at risk," he said.
"We're looking at waiting lists, no home visits, shorter consultation times."
