Divers searching for a Japanese couple missing for eight days have found the body of a man in Kilkee, Co Clare.

Technical support staff from the national headquarters of Civil Defence deployed drones in the cliffs around Kilkee bay in the search for the missing Japenese couple. Picture; Press 22.

The remains were located by the Burren Diving Unit and Kilkeen Diving Club in the water off George's Head at around midday.

The operation was led by Kilkee and coordinated by Cormac McMahon regional dive officer for the South West area.

A formal identification has yet to take place. The body is being transferred to Limerick General Hosital for formal identification and a post mortem.

Sixty-three-year-old Eiji Takagi and 61-year-old Ushio Azaki checked out of their hotel in Spanish Point last Saturday morning.

They were due to fly home to Tokyo from Shannon via London but never checked in for their flights.

Their car - a red 151 Hyundai - was found in Kilkee. There have been shoreline and boat searches since.
