A diver suffering from the bends has been rescued off the Maharees in Co Kerry.

The alarm was raised after a diving companion noticed the diver in his late 30s was feeling unwell while undergoing a routine dive at 1.30pm this afternoon and alerted the local coastguard.

Valentia Coastguard are currently arranging the transportation of the diver – suffering from decompression sickness – to the specialised dives chamber at University Hospital Galway (pictured).

His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.
