Dioceses criticised in child protection audit

The Catholic Church dioceses of Meath, Raphoe and Ossory have been criticised in an audit of child protection guidelines.
The review, carried out by the HSE, examined how the church is handling cases of abuse allegations.
This audit was commissioned by the late Brian Lenihan in 2005 when he was Children's Minister.
It reviewed the arrangements for safeguarding children in 24 dioceses.
It says some, including Waterford, Clonfert and Dublin, have made considerable progress implementing child protection policies and procedures.
However others still have significant improvements to make, in particular Meath, Raphoe and Ossory.
The current Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald is welcoming the report:
“It has taken some time so I welcome the publication of it today, it’s very good to get it to examine precisely what happens. It gives us a picture of the procedures in place.”
The audit says the shortcomings identified don't reflect an unwillingness to improve systems - but rather a slower approach.
