Dept of Justice guilty of discriminating against women
20/12/2005 - 08:25:03The Government department responsible for equality has been found guilty of discriminating against seven female employees.
The seven were among 14 female clerical officers working for An Garda Síochána who claimed they were being unjustly paid less than male gardaí.
The department disputed that the women had been engaged in work similar to the gardaí and argued that there were grounds other than gender for the difference in pay.
However, the Equality Tribunal said today that it had upheld seven of the claims, ruling that the women were entitled to equal pay.
One of the other cases was deemed invalid, while the tribunal ruled that the remaining six women were not engaged in work comparative to their male counterparts.
