Dempsey publishes bill to reduce drink-drive limit

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has published his controversial legislation aimed at cutting the drink-driving limit on Irish roads.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has published his controversial legislation aimed at cutting the drink-driving limit on Irish roads.

Mr Dempsey's plan would cut the limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood for most motorists using Ireland’s roads.

A lower limit of 20mg would also be introduced for learner, novice and professional drivers.

The proposal to cut the limit has already caused a backlash from Fianna Fáil backbenchers threatening to scupper the legislation.

They claim the measure would damage rural pubs and communities by forcing people living in isolated areas to stay at home rather than socialising.

However, Mr Dempsey insists that the measure will save lives on the roads and bring Ireland into line with most other countries across the globe.
