Data Protection Commissioner Hawkes: Gardaí not aware calls were being recorded

The Data Protection Commissioner has said he believes gardaí were not aware their calls were being recorded.

Billy Hawkes said he was told last week by senior gardaí that phone calls at garda stations had been recorded for many years.

He says the recording system appears to have been built into the phone system.

Mr Hawkes said his office advised the Gardaí to delete the recorded information as soon as possible.
