Daly tells Dáil of garda ordered to claim he did not witness shooting

The Dáil has heard details of new allegations of Garda malpractice.

Deputy Clare Daly has revealed details of one claim which she says is being ignored by an internal review group, involving the shooting of a civilian by gardaí.

She said a member of the Gardaí made a report directly to the Taoiseach, who passed it onto a review panel.

Speaking under Dáil privilege she revealed details of the complaint, and said nothing is being done about it.

The relevant question can be heard at about 6:40 in the Leader's Questions video segment.

"This is a question of a person who contacted you last year, and told you he had information of gardaí being present in a room when a civilian was shot by gardaí, and being ordered by his superiors to say that he wasn't present."

She said the Taoiseach then passed the case to the review panel - but nothing has been done since, and the garda in question has not been contacted.

The Taoiseach said 300 cases were assembled and are being assessed by a legal panel. He said the work was not yet complete.
